The Survivorship Problem

Austin built this taxonomy by reading the biographies of people who found something, which is survivorship bias in its purest form. The graveyard is full of people who stayed in motion, did the reading, followed their own strange thread, and got nothing — and they did not write memoirs about it. Nothing here raises your probability to one. Anyone who sells this framework as a method for producing outcomes is selling something.

What it does provide is an actionable decomposition. There are four things labeled “luck”. One you insure against; the other three have budgets, and you are either funding them or you are not. Austin’s own conclusion is the correct posture and worth adopting whole: never count on luck, and never discount it — but know its structure well enough that you do not go around discouraging it.
