Warning Signs of Identity Theft
Threat activity is frequently silent. Monitor your financial logs for the following anomalies:
- IRS E-file Rejection: Electronic filing rejection by the IRS due to a duplicate Social Security number
submission, which you discover immediately upon e-filing.
- Unexplained Statements: Unexplained billing statements or collection notices delivered to your
address. Do not assume it is a wrong delivery; someone could be using your SSN with a pseudonym.
- Debt Collection Calls: Communications from collection agencies regarding credit lines or accounts
you never authorized.
- Unexplained Credit Activity: Unexplained inquiries, credit score drops, or newly established
accounts appearing on your credit reports.
- Credit Denials: Unanticipated denials of loan or mortgage applications despite a solid financial profile.
- Mail Disruption: An abrupt cessation of physical mail delivery or missing mail, indicating a
fraudulent change-of-address filing.
